Dear teammates,

Hello from the United States. We are all so excited to work with you. Before we begin our project, I thought you would like to know a little bit about us.

Montrose, Colorado is located about 300 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado at the gateway to the San Juan mountain range. We are a community of about 10,000 people at an elevation of about 5800 feet. Many people in Montrose are ranchers and farmers, but our school district and candy factory employ the most workers.

As with most Americans, our ancestors are from many countries including Italy and Japan. Many people in the southwest part of Colorado have Mexican ancestors since Spanish and Mexican explorers were the first in our state hundreds of years ago.

Northside Elementary School has 350 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The school is located in the downtown area, about five blocks from Main Street. Our school year runs from September until June with a two week vacation for Christmas. We study math, science, reading, writing, spelling, social studies (history), art, music, p.e. (physical education), and computers.

At this time of year the leaves are turning bright yellow and falling from the trees. The temperature has been around 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 40 and night. It should begin to get colder by October 31st (Halloween). In the winter months our temperatures are as cold as 10F or 20F degrees and in the summer we are as warm as 95F.

The class is looking forward to dressing in costumes for our Halloween holiday (October 31st) and Trick or Treating. They will go door to door in their costumes, usually dressed as something scary like a witch or ghost. Neighbors will give them candy. There are usually parties with games like "bobbing for apples" or a "cake walk".

As we work together, I know we will learn about the animals and plants in your part of the world, and you will learn about ours. If you have any questions about us, please write. I look forward to getting to know you.

Ms. Lisa Crepinsek
