The American Goldfinch

The Amican Goldfinch is a commom bird it is found in weedy fields, farm lands, open woodlands, and urban areas. In those areas you will find the America Goldfinch feeding on thistle seeds. In winter the bird is found eating out of bird feeders. In the summer the male bird is one of the most colorful American birds. After breeding the male and female molt in to a more somber winter plumage.

The Goldfinch is a winter visitor, and is released as a nesting bird by the lesser Goldfinch. The male lessers in the west have green backs, and black cap, but those in the east have black heads, and backs.
