Magellan was a Portugese captain. He studied Columbus' maps of the South
American coastline. He wanted to circumnavigate the world. Like Columbus
, Magellan asked for help from the king of Portugal. The king said no, so
Magellan gothelp from Spain.Magellan started his trip from Spain in 1519
with 5 ships. From the tip of South America, Magellan found a passage to
the Pacific Ocean. Four ships got lost on the journey. Magellan got killed
by the Phillippine Indians.
In 1522 a single ship returned to Spain. Only 18 men came backout of
255. But, they proved that people could sail to the east by sailing west.
