The oceans cover over  71% of the earth's surface. Because the oceans  are so vast, most humans have thought that the oceans are infinitely resilient and able to withstand just about anything we can take from them or put into them. Not so! We can now see the bad effects of human activities such as overfishing, chemical pollution, global climate change and  destruction of coastal habitats.   All these factors are taking their toll on the diversity and abundance of life in the oceans.
